Question 34. How should we meet the need for additional Gypsy, Traveller and caravan sites?
It seems unlikely that there is a need for many additional permanent Traveller sites, although some Transit sites may be needed.

With integrity and respect rather than using undesirable sites such as old dumps or next to A14 as done previously. The plan doesn’t not say much about this other that the houseboat site in north of Cambridge which most dwellers are not of traveller heritage though I am supportive of a appropriate sites for them too.

The Plan should aim for a variety of housing types to provide for all ages and integrate social housing within developments to avoid creating ghettos.

Greater Cambridge Councils should ensure that it addresses the needs of gypsy, traveller and caravan sites on land within its jurisdiction.

It is essential the traveller communities (through the Gypsy Council and other organisations) are consulted on this and their opinions considered. The Gypsy and Traveller communities should not be able to bypass planning laws but communication with them is a necessity.

ECC recommends that the GCA actively engage on an ongoing basis with the neighbouring Essex Local Authorities on this issue.

WITH REFERENCE TO 4.6.3 (Q32-35) The number of homes, and their size and tenure, has a significant impact upon the child yield which is forecast from a new development and ultimately, help to shape the education which is required both in the short and longer term. The expectations for delivery, including the proportion of affordable housing, is essential to enable the Council to review its current provision, and inform its planning for the future.
