Pedestrian safety at junction of High Street, Church Lane and Manor Walk.

Full text:

I have already submitted my support for 8 'Improved High Street'. I would also like to comment on the area around the junction of Church Lane and High Street. This is a difficult area for pedestrians and cyclists to negotiate. Heavy lorries use School Lane and Church Lane and although I realise they have to have some access to the businesses they serve further down Station Road they are a hazard. There is a narrow pavement on one side of Church Lane only but there would obviously be no space for it to be widened. Meanwhile, High Street opens right out at the junction with Church Lane, meaning that pedestrians are exposed for a long time when crossing the top of the High Street. Presumably a refuge half-way over would make access harder for buses. Lastly, for pedestrians walking from Manor Walk to Church Lane, as there is no pavement alongside the church wall, it is necessary for them to cross the High Street opposite the end of Manor Walk and then cross back again to get to the pavement in School Lane. I do not know what to suggest to alleviate conditions, although I can say I would definitely not be in favour of pedestrian guardrails being installed due to the danger they pose to cyclists as well as being out of keeping with the heritage look of the area.
