Respondent: Mr David Martin

Representation Summary:

Pollution from aircraft will cause health problems. Especially vulnerable are children.
The airport will get busier as Cambridge continues to expand as a Technology Centre with an increasing population, this will add to the risks from pollution.
The development is too near the runway to allow dispersal of pollution.
Locating a school near a runway, significantly increases the time children are exposed to dangerous pollutants.

Full text:

I am concerned that the location of the housing estate and school are too close to aircraft activities from the point of view of exposure to un-burnt aviation fuel, referred to as an "odour" in your document, and lead pollution emanating from piston engine aircraft (Avgas fuel.)
I am assuming that Cambridge airport will continue to expand both in aircraft movements and an increasing use of the Maintenance facilities for large jets. Boeing 747's and Airbus for example.
Have you considered:
1. The amount of aviation fuel in litres used per annum, what is the projected use for the future?
2. How much fuel is un-burnt (this happens especially on take off)
3. How much leaded fuel is used per annum.
4. What is the effect on people and especially children. Respiratory problems, especially children, incidence of asthma. Un-burnt fuel is carcinogenic. What is the effect of Lead pollution in the air?
5. Scientific studies have been undertaken regarding pollution and location of schools close to airports, have these been considered?
