Respondent: Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust
The Wildlife Trust supports the inclusion of proposals to enhance the Green Belt for recreation and biodiversity. For Cambridge to grow sustainably much more positive use of the Green Belt must be made, including delivery of the proposals within the Cambridge Nature Network.

While acknowledging the passing reference to green spaces in this policy discussion, the Wildlife Trust believes that much greater emphasis on the funding of strategic natural greenspace and GI is required in the plan. Policies such as BG/BG and BG/GI and the required strategic natural greenspaces will not be delivered without explicit funding mechanisms linked to all new development, and not just the largest major developments. Detailed GI and habitat interventions and proposals will need to be developed with partners and included within the Infrastructure Delivery Plan if the Local Plan is to be truly sustainable.

The Wildlife Trust acknowledges that the NE Cambridge allocation has the potential to be a sustainable new quarter for Cambridge, however the Area Action Plan has fundamentally failed to provide for the strategic greenspace that the new population will require, with its woeful open space proposals. The Local Plan HRA identifies the need to provide Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspaces and not rely on existing provision such as Milton Country Park which is full. It is essential that this policy and the AAP provide for sufficient strategic natural greenspace, which would also benefit other nearby communities with deficiencies in natural greenspace.

Should this proposal continue to be brought forward, the Wildlife Trusts welcomes the recognition of the need for significant Green Belt enhancement in adjoining areas of White Hill and Nine Wells , to provide green infrastructure and biodiversity improvements supporting the objectives of the Strategic Initiative 3: Gog Magog Hills and chalkland fringe. However, this location is renowned for its farmland bird assemblage and if the allocation is progressed, specific measures to mitigate and compensate for these losses should be built into the policy requirements. Other beneficial aspects could include enhancing sustainable access routes towards the Gog Magog Hills.
