The New Museums Site Development Framework Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)

Representation ID: 30707

Received: 05/09/2015

Respondent: Prof. Valerie Gibson

Representation Summary:

The old Cavendish is a world heritage site of enormous scientific importance. The proposal has been formulated without consultation with the scientists and historians who can advise on its scientific heritage. It would be a travesty to demolish even part of it without further consultation.

Full text:

The proposal includes a "cut-through" through the ground floor of the old Cavendish building, which has great scientific world heritage. The proposal includes demolishing Rutherford's personal laboratory. Rutherford is one of many "giants of science" who worked in the Cavendish; Nobel prize winner and father of the picture of the atom we have today.

The proposal has been formulated without consultation with scientists and historians who can advise on its scientific heritage. The old Cavendish building is an excellent candidate for world heritage site, and in the very least should be reclassed as Grade I.

Please do not demolish any of the Cavendish without considering other proposals to re-purpose the building as a scientific heritage centre for public engagement.
