Respondent: Mr Malcom Underwood

Representation Summary:

I do not see why we need yet more eateries or 'nightlife': there is more than enough of this in the city centre proper.

I am a resident of Sturton Street. I welcome certain elements of the proposed plan: better organized pedestrian/cycle access, and restoration of certain of the pre-Grafton routes nearby. I am deeply suspicious, however, of 'selective redevelopment' of retail.

It seems to me that a number of businesses: the vacuum cleaner centre, Bowes and Bowes, Works,Primark, and the charity shops, cater for people with lower incomes. I think that 'redevelopment' would involve a hike on rents and push such concerns out. I do not see why we need yet more eateries or 'nightlife': there is more than enough of this in the city centre proper. The present Burleigh Street and Fitzroy Street are not marginalised: they merely provide affordable choices in an increasingly polarized economic situation.

Please let me know your response to these comments or tell me where such response can be found.

Many thanks for your effort in preparing the plan.
