The New Museums Site Development Framework Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)

Representation ID: 30632

Received: 16/07/2015

Respondent: Caitlin Alvey

Representation Summary:

Yes to making pedestrians a priority. Please don't forget people on bikes. You must do something to ease the amount of traffic, or cars will still dominate the space, no matter how pretty it looks.

Full text:

There is a huge congestion problem here, and unless something is done to tackle the amount of vehicular traffic in the area, 'prettifying' the street won't help pedestrians all that much.

Therefore controlling the level of traffic would be essential.

Be careful that new designs do not force people on bikes to mix with pedestrians or motor vehicles. 'Shared space' does not help anyone. It is dangerous for pedestrians and people riding bikes, and it's an annoyance to car drivers.

Trees jutting out into the road, designed to 'slow' cars, will only force people on bikes into an even smaller space alongside vehicles.
