Yes, land is a finite resource and should be used efficiently where at all possible. Such solutions allow people to park closer to where they wish to go rather than having sprawling cycle parking.

Current policy provides a good level of cycle parking. The greater effort should be on providing the supporting infrastructure - safe and convenient routes, showers, lockers, cycle maintenance, incentives to travel by cycle.

Question 33: what sort of innovative measures could be used to improve links between the Cambridge North Station and destinations like the Science Park?
Representation ID: 33819
Received: 25/03/2019
Respondent: Trinity College
Agent: Bidwells
The principal option is to utilise autonomous vehicles; in particular, the Guided Busway. This is underused and offers an off-line route. A route that also included the Cambridge Science Park loop road would be able to accommodate autonomous vehicles in the foreseeable future as a Level 4 Autonomous vehicle.
More land available at the Station for cycle hub parking, including for electric bikes.

Question 34: Are there specific types of employment spaces that we should seek to support in this area?
Representation ID: 33820
Received: 25/03/2019
Respondent: Trinity College
Agent: Bidwells
Employment space should be within the Science and Technology sector or clearly be ancillary or support it. Other B Class employment could be located elsewhere in and around the City. To achieve a world-class Innovation District it needs a strong brand and identity, having too many not complimentary uses would weaken that brand when seen in a competitive global market.

The policy framework should be flexible to allow for such developments. Policy should not try and restrict the market, but rather be focussed on achieving the overarching aim to create high-quality place underpinned by the Science and Technology cluster.

This is a matter for those landowners, but the premise should be working to the principle that employment space should be within the Science and Technology sector or clearly be ancillary or support it. Other B Class employment could be located elsewhere in and around the City. To achieve a world-class Innovation District it needs a strong brand and identity, having too many non-complimentary uses would weaken that brand when seen in a competitive global market.

Trinity College Cambridge would be supportive of such an approach. Housing range and choice is important to create a neighbourhood and give the most amount of people the choice of living close to where they work. CSP has a diverse range of employees with an equally diverse need from the housing market.

The greater success of the North East area will be achieved if people do live and work in the neighbourhood. Whether this needs to be tethered housing is not yet clear, but the aspiration for what that seeks to achieve is supported.
